Another great Bioneers Conference

This past weekend we attended the annual Bioneers Conference in San Rafael, California ( where thousands of people flock from all around the world to attend seminars on everything from environmental activism to healthy school lunch programs, as well as learn about alternative energy and sustainability!

"Founded in 1990, Bioneers is a nonprofit organization that promotes practical environmental solutions and innovative social strategies for restoring the Earth and communities."

The Bioneers Mission is so wonderful:

"It's All Alive, It's All Intelligent, It's All Connected."

"Bioneers offers pragmatic solutions that honor the living web of the natural world as the most fertile source of inspiration and models. It's all alive."

One of the beauties of biology is that its facts can become our metaphors, and these underlying codes serve as inspiring parables for how we can organize a more just, humane and authentically sustainable society. It's all intelligent."

"...Bioneers gathers people at the crossroads of ecological restoration, human health and social justice. It's all connected."

We attended the Bioneers Conference to do some research on an upcoming episode we're going to do on healthy school lunches, including a feature on Chef Ann Cooper ( and her book "Lunch Lessons, Changing the Way we Feed Our Children" 2006, Harper Collins ( Chef Ann is a true hero of the organic food movement into school nutritional programs, doing her part every day to feed children healthy and delicious meals!
We're really looking forward to filming her and to introducing families around the country (and world) to what just makes common sense in raising smart and healthy kids.

Hippy Gourmet & Nutiva - We were also really happy to run into our friends at the Nutiva booth ( ) - who have successfully introduced Hemp Seed nutritional ingredients into absolutely delicious products. The Hippy Gourmet is proud to use Nutiva in everything from Hemp Crusted Solar Pizzas (episode #51), to Hemp Shakes , and as a fantastic addition to Veggie Sushi Rolls (episode #110).

Just to let you know:
Hemp seed is considered by leading researchers and medical doctors to be one of the most nutritious food sources on the planet. Shelled hemp seed is packed with 33 percent pure digestible protein and is rich in iron and vitamin E as well as omega-3 and GLA. Hemp is full of flavor, rich in texture and is so abundant and sustainable, so why not give it a try?

Support our troops - while their families are going hungry!

We read today in the the San Diego Union-Tribune that struggling families of soldiers serving abroad are forced to stand in charity lines for bread, milk and diapers!

The article is by Rick Rogers is somehow hard to comprehend, even after reading it several times over. Not because the article isn't well written, but because how can it be that here in the United States of America, families are going hungry? Not to mention families of service men and women who are sacrificing everything to uphold and defend our constitution (or what's left of it).

Does this make any sense to anyone?

Ways to help (let's do our part to donate quality foods, such as organic bulk items and ingredients for building healthy families - rather than merely throwing reject frozen dinners at them in damaged boxes).

People interested in donating food, furniture or money to help military families in San Diego County can call:

- Military Outreach Ministry at Camp Pendleton: (760) 908-7043

- Military Outreach Ministries at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station: (619) 843-8964

Autumn already...

So amazing isn't' it? The cycles of the season.
One day it's summer and the next day it's fall.
The warm, balmy breeze bringing the scent of summer fruit, is replaced by the crisp air, the smell of fresh rain and the turning toward the warmer, more substantial ingredients that seem to match the colors of autumn.
Take our friend the Acorn Squash for instance. Slice it in half and scoop out the seeds. Rub each half with a little olive oil (makes them shiny and not stick to the baking pan). Then fill it with anything you like, perhaps some diced apples, raisins, walnuts, some maple syrup and a little brown sugar? Fits perfectly into that scooped out hole in the middle! Then right into a pre-heated oven at 450 degrees for 35-40 minutes (good to keep an eye on it and poke it with a fork when nice and tender.
This recipe is simple, warming and very fulfilling and can be cut into smaller pieces to feed a hungry bunch of people! Perfect by itself, or as a side dish for a main course or soup.
Enjoy the colors of fall!

Think Peace!

Electric Vehicle Rally

We were really fortunate to catch the annual Electric Auto Association’s Silicon Valley Chapter electric vehicle rally!

For those who have a commute of less than 30 miles each way to work, there is a wide selection now of super innovative vehicles that cost pennies per mile and are environmentally friendly.

We start by looking at the Electric Motorsport bikes, scooters and even performance motor cycles Many of their products are Italian designed and offer a great deal of elegance for their value.

Another scooter company called offers American built electric scooters that are sleek, efficient and of course whisper quiet! They have a simple tag line: go 450 miles for $1.00!

Moving directly to the top end of the electric vehicle offerings, we discovered the sports car that gets up to 250 miles per charge and can go from 0-60 in less than 4 seconds! The technical staff at Tesla told us that they’ve already sold out for the rest of 2006 and are taking orders for late 2007!

Do not adjust your computer monitors here, this is a concept car called the Tango (named appropriately for the two-seater back and front layout). The Tango can also race forward at 0-60 in 4 seconds, and with its modern and narrow design can maneuver and park in even the tightest spots. Apparently George Clooney owns and drives a Tango…something we’d love to see him drive up to the Oscars in!

Last but not least, and really you’re not going to believe this incredible feet of engineering and design - but here we have a solar powered, electric chariot that is actually pulled by a walking/rollerblading robot! If we didn’t see this vehicle running with our own eyes, we wouldn’t be able to describe it to you- but Bob Schneeveis of Emperical Engineering has really pulled it off! This two-legged, Terminator looking robot, was dressed as a Roman Centurian (with a George Bush head of course), and wears a sign that reads “Down on my luck, can you spare some gas?” Best of all, this vehicle moves with unbelievable speed, grace and a human-like style that will make you do a double-take!

We’re not quite sure what Mr. Schneevis’ production plans are for his highly functional solar powered chariot, but it really gives us such a warm feeling of hope to see what’s really possible out there! Have to also mention that Bob towed his Solar Chariot to the Electric Vehicle Rally on the back of his Sparrow - which he charges at home via his solar panel arrays!
