Happy New Year 2008!

Peace, Love, Health, Joy, Calm, Organic, Sustainable, Fair-Trade, and Abundant Appreciation for a wonderful 2008!

A message of hope.

The winter solstice gives us a rare opportunity to witness the duality of all existence as we stand together in the moment when the days are the shortest and the nights are the longest.

But even through the darkest of times, all we need do is close our eyes and see the bright sun rising across the horizon of the earth, bringing us the promise of a season of light with each new day.

So for the holidays we wish you all this lighter perspective of things, and above all to be hopeful.

Hopeful for Peace on earth and for love,

Hopeful for greater understanding and acceptance of each other,

Hopeful for a return to common decency and to simple acts of kindness and humanity,

Hopeful for an awakened sense of community that confronts injustice with the white hot light of truth,

And Hopeful we never lose sight of how miraculous all of this everything truly is.

We give thanks to know all of you!

Happy Veggie Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We call this "Spare the Turkey Day" – which does not mean having to sacrifice a wonderful meal shared with friends and family. Rather, we merely suggest preparing organic, sustainable, family-farm produced vegetables, grains and fruits!

Try an organic Acorn Squash!
Cut it in half and remove the seeds.
Spread a little organic Virgin Olive Oil on both sides.
Bake it at 425 for 40 minutes (or until tender with a fork),then sprinkle a little maple syrup, chopped nuts and dried fruits (your choice) into each cavity and then put it back in the oven for another 10 minutes!
This is a recipe that is so yummy and satisfying either as part of a main course, side dish or even dessert!

Hippy Gourmet on NBC News Friday, 11/23 at 6PM

For those of our fans in the San Francisco Bay Area,
you can watch us on Friday, 11/23 on NBC News at 6PM (Channel 11, or Channel 3 on Comcast cable)!

NBC is doing a story about how our TV series "Organic Living with the Hippy Gourmet" is helping to influence restaurants, catering companies, hotels and folks at home to go all organic.

The story will be filmed on location at the Vegetarian House Restaurant (www.VegetarianHouse.us), and will also include an interview with the folks from Veritable Vegetable ( www.VeritableVegetable.com) - a women owned and operated produce distribution company that has been supporting organic, family farms since 1974!

We'll also have some tips for creating a more sustainable and organic holiday season, as well as discussing our on-going efforts to produce our TV series (weekends at 5:30P on TV20, cable 13 and on PBS nationally), and of course about our new cookbook "The Hippy Gourmet's Quick and Simple Cookbook for Healthy Eating" (Hachette USA).

"Taking back the name Hippie"

By James Ehrlich
November 16, 2007

We're taking back the name Hippie for all the positive and hopeful things it truly represents.

The recent story in the news about Senators Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer (D-NY) attempting to earmark $1 million for a museum in Woodstock, New York, could have been the first real public steps to reclaim the name Hippie in a positive light, while commemorating this historic location and events that categorically re-shaped our country in so many profound ways.

Unfortunately and predictably, this earmark was dropped like a hot potato not because of the modest amount of money being asked for, (a mere 1% of the overall budget), but because of the negative connotations surrounding one word, 'Hippie.'

It can be said that in 1967 the term Hippie was born out of a generation's desire for peace, love, community and environmental stewardship, amongst many other noble ideals.   But as early as 1968, just one year after the famed "Summer of Love" in San Francisco, the images of the peaceful flower-child were replaced with the dark stereotypes that sought to destroy the spirit of one of the most positive movements our nation has ever seen.

During the 1970's, Madison Avenue enjoyed portraying the colorful and and 'far-out' way to market products in a 'hippie-style,' even as a separate campaign to defame the name Hippie in mainstream media was already in full motion.

With the same gusto and enthusiasm that America was taught to despise communists in the 1950's, a similar concerted effort was placed on equating the name Hippie with anything dirty, detached from reality, and on the fringe of society. So 40 years later it's no wonder that by merely invoking the name Hippie, those who wish to marginalize others and deprecate their opinions and credibility can do so with one simple word.

The irony of course is that Hippie ideology brought us a renewed environmental awareness, after 70+ years of unchecked industrial revolution, reconnected us to healthy eating, by returning us to the roots of organics and sustainable crops and food sources, and can even be said to be the inspiration for everything from solar power, to hybrid vehicles, and even personal computers, and the Internet in many ways.

Hippies taught us how to leverage the creative freedom in music, blending the inspiration of folk lyrics with rock melodies, and turning up the volume for the world to hear. Hippie culture gave us pop art, edgy documentary films, and poetry (amongst a myriad of other art forms), to enable individuals with the power to experiment and convey stories, if only to offer a little perspective on what is truly important in life.

Now, nearly a decade into the new millennium and after the recent 40 th Anniversary of the Summer of Love in San Francisco, we're calling back the name Hippie to be defined as culturally American as Jazz, and to therefore be due all of its historical significance and status as the great American cultural movement that it deserves.

If the recent Green Festival in San Francisco proves anything, it's that there is a lot of money to be made from Hippie ingenuity as well.   Being called 'The World's Largest Sustainability Event,' the Green Festival is clearly a vibrant market place for folks looking for environmentally positive products and services to support. Literally tens of thousands of people attended the GreenFestival, where we witnessed first-hand with our TV cameras the fact that the green economy is flourishing. And yes, this is what we call very Hippie.

We were also struck by the number of young people who attended and volunteered at the Green Festival. The next crop of late teen and 20-somethings who identify themselves as Hippies, and how their interpretation of living Hippie is set to shape a whole new generation of positive thought and actions to come.

Like the word 'liberal' we can either stand idle and allow a vocal minority (and their powerful media alliances) to equate this word with being 'un-American' somehow, or we can stand up and be proud for what these words really mean to us in our own lives.

So we're taking the name Hippie back, and are proud of all that it means and conveys!

James Ehrlich is the Producer and Director of The Hippy Gourmet, a national PBS TV cooking, travel and lifestyle series and Organic Living with the Hippy Gourmet, a commercially broadcast TV series featuring all things organic and sustainable, and is also Co-author of "The Hippy Gourmet's Quick and Simple Cookbook for Healthy Eating" (Hachette USA).

Over 35 million Americans faced hunger in 2006: USDA

Reuters News Reports

By Christopher Doering Wed Nov 14,

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government said the number of Americans who went hungry in 2006 was held in check at 35 million people from the prior year, but food advocacy groups said on Wednesday more needs to be done...." - full article here

Exactly one week before Thanksgiving we learn that roughly 10% of all Americans (or 35 million people) are going hungry each and every day!

This, coupled with the report that 1 in 4 homeless in our country are veterans, many of them returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan only to find their jobs, benefits, marriages and homes have disappeared.

The FDA terms millions of people going hungry as 'food insecurity' - meaning that after the rising costs of housing, fuel and food, and with people earning less and having to work more, many families (and especially children, 12.63 million of them to be exact) are going without proper nutrition.

This is not political, neither red or blue, conservative or liberal, this is our neighbors and a good portion of our communities going without food and basic sustenance.

Please contact your local food bank, charity, or spiritual organization to see what each of us can do to donate, volunteer and otherwise pitch in to help others in real need.

Thanksgiving is nothing if not about feeding others before ourselves, and for finding ways to prioritize our society toward the goal of curing hunger wherever it pangs.

More to come on this and more...

"Organic really is better..."

From the  UK Sunday Times On line:

"The biggest study into organic food has found that it is more nutritious than ordinary produce and may help to lengthen people's lives...."

"...The study found that organic fruit and vegetables contained as much as 40% more antioxidants, which scientists believe can cut the risk of cancer and heart disease..."

Although the Hippy Gourmet finds this study rather obvious, it's wonderful that our friends in the UK are doing this kind of research and proving what we've been saying and practicing for years!

For more information on how to buy organic ingredients visit www.localharvest.org/csa/ or check out your local farmer's markets, health food stores, or WholeFoods.

A wonderful day at the Spice of Life Festival in Berkeley, California!

This past Sunday, October 14th The Hippy Gourmet paid a visit to the annual Spice of Life Festival on Shattuck Street in downtown Berkeley, California!

It was a beautiful, sunny day and we got a chance to hang out with about 40,000 of our closest friends from the San Francisco Bay Area.

We were on stage with the Kitchen's on Fire (www.KitchenonFire.com) chef Mike C., showing the crowd how to make an Organic Spaghetti Squash with Marinara Sauce! Yum! (recipe below)

Then after we fed the hungry crowd with all that wonderful spaghetti squash, we parked ourselves at the Pegasus Bookstore booth at the festival and did hours of book signings and fun DVD give-aways, as well as photo opportunities with our host, Bruce Brennan! Amy from Pegasus was awesome ( http://www.pegasusbookstore.com/) and if you're in Berkeley you just have to go and check out there bookstores! Warm, comfy, inviting and everyone there is so knowledgeable, especially when it comes to helping you find our "Hippy Gourmet's Quick and Simple Cookbook for Healthy Eating" (Hachette USA).

The folks at Kitchen on Fire were so incredible! They had the whole operation fine tuned and ready for action and were masters on-stage and off! We also want to thank the Shattuck Street organization and the friendly people at Elephant Pharmacy in Berkeley, who were kind enough to allow this event to take place in their main parking lot!

Spaghetti Squash - don't be afraid of Squash!
It's yellow and can be about the size of a football.
Boil a large pot of water and either slice the squash in half first, or poke holes in it before placing it in the boiling water.
Depending on the squash it can take about 30-40 minutes to cook through (it's nice and soft and tender on the inside)
Let it cool a little...then scrape the seeds from the inside of the squash (you can do this beforehand if you cut it in half)
Using a fork, gently scrape the inside of each half and watch as it comes out looking just like pasta noodles!
Marinara is easy to make.
Put some garlic nicely minced with some olive oil in a sauce pan.
Fresh, organic tomatoes sliced and diced go on top of that (you can add some onions too if you like)
Add some fresh or dried oregano and/or marjoram to taste and let the sauce simmer down.
Once you like the taste of the sauce, take it off the heat and gently stir it over the Spaghetti Squash, making sure to mix it well.
Serve it up hot and ask yourself if you even miss pasta! It's loaded with vitamins, low on carbs and of course 100% organic. Enjoy!

"Organic Living with the Hippy Gourmet" premiers tonight on TV20 (cable 13) 5:30P

To all of our local San Francisco, Bay Area fans (from Ukiah, California to Monterey, California and San Francisco to Sacramento roughly) - (plus other stations around the country coming soon).

Our new commercial version of the Hippy Gourmet begins this evening at 5:30 PM on TV20 (cable 13) and will be on every weekend (Saturday and Sunday in this time slot).

"Organic Living with the Hippy Gourmet" is a wonderful progression for us in addition to our national PBS series (that also has a new season of shows coming your way this month), because the caveat is that only 'green and sustainable' sponsors are allowed to advertise on our show!

We're also so proud to be blocked for a full hour of programming (from 5:30 - 6:30) with "YourGreenLife" with Lesley Nagey!

Our new series features wonderful chefs, organic produce and sustainable ingredients, with amazing stories of people making a real difference in the world! Tonight's first show for instance is about Ann Cooper ( www.LunchLessons.com) the Berkeley school system lunch lady who prepares organic, hand-made foods for 8,000 school kids each and every day!

Tomorrow you can come meet the Hippy Gourmet at the Berkeley Spice of Life Festival (we'll be there live on stage from 1:30 - 2pm) and also signing books before and after.

Don't forget to spread the word about our "Hippy Gourmet's Quick and Simple Cookbook for Healthy Eating" (Hachette USA) - as we're calling this 'recipes to end the war'!

Happy Birthday Governor Schwarzenegger!

To celebrate Governor Schwarzenegger for all his efforts to increase the usage of solar powered technologies in the state of California, we reconnect with inventor Bob Schneeveis who has a birthday gift to share with the Governor.

In this solar powered TV segment from the Hippy Gourmet television series, we revisit with Bob as he shows us his updated solar powered roller blading chariot! This version has Governor Schwarzenegger carrying a message of a better environment through solar power!

Bob's also upgraded the chariot with a solar voltaic convertible top that's totally modular and helps charge the vehicle's batteries, proving that solar panels fit perfectly on top of vehicles.

We're just so proud of Bob Schneeveis for all of his inventiveness and creativity, and also so pleased with Governor Schwarzenegger's commitment to solar power and a cleaner environment.

Yet another great reason to go organic...

In today's news, there's a story about 'cloned' foods being mixed in with other conventional food products without any other additional warnings or notifications to the consumer.

However, all foods that carry the USDA Organic label on them will be the only true way to differentiate between what is real and what is cloned.

From MSNBC: "Cloning is taboo to Organic Valley, the country's biggest organic farming cooperative...."

"This is absolutely prohibited in our world. It goes against everything we believe," said George Siemon, CEO of the 700-member cooperative. "Organic is based on having plenty with what nature's given us."

You can check out our most recent segment from the Green Festival at www.YouTube.com/HippyGourmet where we feature Organic Valley (amongst other organic, sustainable, fair-trade and hemp based companies and products).

So yet another great reason to go organic!
